Meet Speedway Aviation Services
Speedway Aviation Services is being built around three long-term objectives:
- Support the Speedway fleet. Provide exceptional maintenance that keeps our training aircraft safe and available.
- Serve the region. Grow into a high-quality, customer-facing maintenance business for aircraft owners and operators.
- Develop future mechanics. Partner with local technical colleges to give aspiring A&P mechanics hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world experience.
Just as Speedway Flight Training develops future professional pilots through programs like our Fast Track to the Flight Deck, our vision is for Speedway Aviation Services to help develop future aviation maintenance professionals.
The Aircraft You’ll Work On
Our current and expanding fleet includes Cessna 172s and Tecnam aircraft, including the multi-engine Tecnam P2006T. We plan to add more modern Tecnam aircraft as we grow. If you bring Cessna 172 experience, Tecnam time, Rotax engine experience or factory training, or a strong background with Garmin avionics, you’ll feel at home.
What the Director of Maintenance Will Do
You’ll start very hands-on. That means performing and supervising scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, conducting annual and other required inspections, and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, engine, and airframe issues.
At the same time, you’ll build the operation itself:
- Systems. Maintenance records, work orders, inspection, and quality-control procedures.
- Planning. Preventative maintenance and inspection schedules designed to keep aircraft flying and cut unplanned downtime.
- Supply chain. Parts, tooling, inventory, vendors, and outside services.
- People. Recruiting, mentoring, and leading additional maintenance personnel as the shop grows.
- Partnerships. Relationships with manufacturers, suppliers, specialty shops, and technical colleges.
- Strategy. Working with ownership to decide what to build in-house, what to outsource, and how to serve aircraft beyond our own fleet.
Who We’re Looking For
Required: a current FAA Airframe & Powerplant certificate, a current Inspection Authorization, and strong general aviation maintenance experience. You can independently diagnose and resolve maintenance issues. You know FAA maintenance requirements, aircraft records, inspections, and return-to-service responsibilities inside and out.
Technical ability is only part of it. We want someone who sees a problem and owns it. Someone who can walk into a hangar, spot what needs to improve, make a plan, and carry it out.
We want a leader who is just as comfortable turning a wrench as sitting down with ownership to talk about growth. Someone who gets excited about developing people. Previous Director of Maintenance, shop-lead, or military maintenance leadership experience is a big plus, as is any history mentoring apprentices or A&P students.
Above all, you share our belief that safety and quality come first. Always.
Questions & Answers
Where is the position located?
On-site at Atlanta Speedway Airport (KHMP) in Hampton, Georgia, south of the Atlanta metro area. Remote work isn’t an option for this role.
Do I need an IA, or is an A&P enough?
Both are required. The Director of Maintenance serves as the lead A&P/IA and will conduct annual inspections within the privileges of their FAA certificates and authorizations.
What does compensation look like?
We intend to offer a competitive package based on experience, qualifications, and leadership capability. Specific compensation and potential performance incentives are discussed during the interview process.
Will this role grow over time?
Yes. The scope is expected to grow significantly, from supporting our fleet to leading a team, serving outside customers, and building a pipeline of future A&P mechanics with local technical colleges.
Build the Hangar You’d Want to Start In
Picture the clipboard again. Same squawk sheet, same annual, same flashlight. Only now the shop runs on systems you built. The apprentice beside you came from a technical college partnership you helped start. And the training airplane rolling out of the hangar is yours to sign off.
If you are an experienced A&P/IA who wants to build and lead an aviation maintenance organization, we’d like to talk with you. Send your resume with a brief introduction covering your maintenance background, leadership experience, experience developing others, and why helping build Speedway Aviation Services interests you.
